In order to achieve a well-contoured and balanced body shape, many men and women aim to increase or alter the shape and size of their buttocks. This can be achieved in several different ways.
For example, some individuals opt to reduce the size of other areas of their body through liposuction. This ultimately creates a greater proportional difference between, for instance, the waist and the buttocks or the upper body and the buttocks.
Other patients opt for buttocks implants — a procedure that involves surgically placing silicone inserts within the buttocks in order to achieve more volume there.
A final option is the Brazilian butt lift, or BBL. This natural procedure takes fats from various other areas of the patient’s own body and reinserts it into the buttocks to increase the volume.
Let’s take a detailed look at the specific techniques a BBL employs.
What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
The goal of a Brazilian butt lift is to augment the buttocks using the patient’s own unwanted fat. Unlike a more traditional buttock augmentation procedure, which uses implants, with a BBL, fat is harvested from the patient’s body prior to it being reinserted into the buttocks via fat grafting.
Brazilian Butt Lift Technique
There are two main phases to the Brazilian butt lift procedure. The first phase involves harvesting unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. In most patients, fat is harvested from areas like the flanks, back, hips, and/or stomach.
The second phase of the Brazilian butt lift surgery is to replace the fat that was harvested from other areas of the body onto the buttocks. The overall result is a shapelier backside and reduced fat and bulk in areas where the patient wants to be slimmer.
Because the fat that is used to add volume to the buttocks can be taken from a variety of areas on the body, each Brazilian butt lift procedure is different and is catered to the individual. As a result, it’s very important that you relay your specific concerns to Dr. Sieber at your Brazilian butt lift consultation appointment. Be honest about what you would like to achieve with your surgery, and don’t hesitate to discuss the areas of your body that are particularly bothersome.
Before Your Surgery
Once you have gone through your consultation appointment with Dr. Sieber, you will book a specific date for your surgery. Dr. Sieber will also give you a detailed pamphlet of information about how to prepare for your procedure.
For example, it’s important to quit smoking at least two weeks prior to your scheduled surgery date. You may also need to stop taking certain medications or supplements, which may hinder your recovery and put you at risk.
Lastly, make sure that you have made arrangements for after your surgery. You should take at least one week off from work or school and have someone to take you home after the procedure.
The Day of Surgery
Your Brazilian butt lift surgery will take place at an accredited surgical facility. Once you arrive at the facility, our staff will welcome you and take you into a pre-operating room. There, you will be prepared for surgery, and you will have the opportunity to speak for a few moments with Dr. Sieber. He will go over the procedure with you once more and answer any questions you may have. He may also make several markings on your body, which will aid him during your surgery.
From your pre-surgery room, you will be taken to the operating room. There, the first step of your procedure will be the administration of anesthesia. These medications will be administered by an anesthesiologist for your comfort and safety during surgery.
Next, Dr. Sieber will begin performing liposuction and harvesting unwanted fat from the target areas that you previously decided upon. This involves making discrete incisions near these key areas. The fat will be agitated and removed via a cannula, and it will then be processed and prepared for reinsertion into the buttocks.
Once the fat is ready, Dr. Sieber will use a syringe to augment the buttocks using the harvested fat. Keep in mind that not all of the grafted fat will “survive” in its new location. This means that Dr. Sieber will likely harvest and reinsert slightly more fat than is ultimately necessary, in order to account for any survival loss.
The last step is to close up the incisions, and then you will be taken to a recovery room where you will be taken care of as you awaken from the anesthesia. You will spend a short time in the recovery room and have a chance to speak with Dr. Sieber about your procedure. Finally, in most cases, you will be able to return home with a trusted relative or friend within several hours.
What to Expect After Surgery
Before you leave after your surgery, Dr. Sieber will give you a pamphlet of information about how to care for your incision sites and recover from your surgery. You may have a bit of swelling, bruising, and pain and discomfort. This can be helped with the care instructions provided to you by Dr. Sieber.
He may prescribe pain medications to aid with discomfort, but you should not experience this for long. Swelling will go down as the days pass. You should avoid any physical activity, including lifting anything heavy. After a few days to a week, you will see Dr. Sieber for a postoperative appointment where he will assess your recovery and how the surgery went. You should start to see results right away after your surgery and more as the swelling goes down.
