What Is the Recovery Time for Breast Implants?

If you’ve been considering enhancing your appearance with breast surgery, you may have thought about breast augmentation with implants.

This surgery is performed for a number of reasons. Some seek implants because they’ve had their natural breasts removed due to breast cancer. Others are mothers who are finished having children and want to reclaim their pre-baby confidence with younger looking, perkier breasts. Still others have never been happy with their breasts and are finally seeking a solution.

No matter your reason for breast augmentation surgery, it’s always a good idea to do your research before committing to the procedure. While breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries today, it never hurts to learn everything you can before making a final decision.

In the following article, we’ll go over the basics, starting with the different types of implants available. We’ll then move on to what breast implants cost, possible risks and complications, and what the recovery time for implants is like.

Let’s begin!

Types of Breast Implants

Recovery Time For Breast Implants Surgery

There are two main types of implants available: silicone and saline implants. There is also a newer type — gummy bear implants — which is becoming increasingly popular.

Silicone

Silicone implants involve a silicone shell that is filled with silicone gel. It’s a common belief that silicone implants feel more realistic than other types of implants.

Unfortunately, this type of implant can pose some risks in the event that they leak. If you’ve ever wondered do breast implants cause cancer, you may have also read about silicone implants and their relation to BIA-ALCL (breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma). In fact, BIA-ALCL is only related to textured silicone implants. Your surgeon will go over all of this with you at your consultation.

Saline

Saline implants also have a silicone shell, but inside is saline solution (sterile saltwater). Saline implants may not feel or look as realistic as silicone implants, which is usually because of rippling on the skin. But if they leak, you’ll know right away because the breast will “deflate.”

Of course, any time a breast implant leaks, it can always be fixed and/or replaced by your surgeon. It’s just important to catch it right away.

Gummy Bear

Finally, there are gummy bear implants. These are essentially the same as silicone implants, but they tend to be firmer because the gel consistency inside is thicker. Many people say they also have a more natural feel because they generally hold their shape better.

How Much Do Breast Implants Cost?

 Recovery Time For Breast Implants

There’s unfortunately no easy answer to this question. The total cost of your procedure will always depend on the geographical location in which you get surgery, the particular surgeon you go to, what type of implant you choose, and whether or not you are undergoing other procedures at the same time.

One of the most common accompanying procedures is breast lift surgery. Many women opt for both a breast lift and breast augmentation. Other procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, etc. may be combinable with breast augmentation as well. Ultimately, combining procedures can lower the individual costs of each procedure, but overall, you will of course be paying more.

To give a rough estimate, most surgeons in the United States will charge between $5,000 and $10,000 for breast implant surgery alone. Keep in mind that health insurance companies will generally not cover breast augmentation unless it is done for medical reasons. For example, if you had to have a mastectomy as a result of breast cancer, your insurance company may pay for reconstructive surgery, which in most cases, would involve implants.

Possible Risks and Complications

As with any major surgery, there are possible risks and complications related to breast augmentation. These include the following:

  • Risks while under anesthesia
  • Hematomas
  • Bleeding
  • Rupture or leakage of implants
  • Noticeable scarring
  • Tight scar tissue near the implant
  • Skin wrinkling around the implants
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation)
  • Infection
  • Bad implant positioning (and a possible need for revision implant surgery)
  • Pain that won’t go away

These risks are important considerations as you think about getting breast implant surgery. Most breast augmentation surgeries go well and have positive outcomes, but if you have questions or concerns about potential complications, be sure to bring them up with your surgeon at your consultation appointment.

What to Expect During Your Breast Augmentation Recovery Time?

Breast Implants Recovery Time

fter breast implant surgery, most patients should expect to have some discomfort and pain for a few days. Pain medication can help.

Your chest area will have bandages and gauze covering the incision site (sites), and it’s possible your surgeon will have used drainage tubes to reduce swelling and fluid buildup in your breast tissue. Compression garments will be essential during the breast augmentation recovery process, and you’ll need a lot of rest.

Your surgeon will discuss the specifics with you, but in general, you should stop major physical activities and avoid heavy lifting for about six weeks or more during your recovery period. To help with pain and discomfort, your doctor may prescribe pain medications, and OTC pain relievers may be recommended as well.

Of course, you’ll want to be sure to schedule some time off from work or school for your breast augmentation surgery recovery. You’ll also need someone you trust to take you home from the surgical facility as you will still be recovering from the anesthesia.

When it comes to seeing changes, you’ll notice larger breasts right away after surgery. Still, it’s important to wait until the swelling goes completely down before assessing your final results.

Questions and Answers About Breast Augmentation Surgery

How long is recovery from breast implants?

Typically, patients require approximately six to eight weeks for a complete recovery from their breast augmentation procedure. While some women may start feeling like themselves again within the first week of breast augmentation recovery, it’s important to note that individual experiences can vary depending on factors such as age, body type, medical history, and lifestyle.

How long do breast implants take to heal?

Several factors, including implants size, type, placement, and the surgeon’s expertise, can impact the duration of the recovery process. Typically, a complete recovery typically spans around four to six weeks on average.

What not to do after breast augmentation surgery?

In the initial weeks following your breast augmentation surgery in Houston, it’s crucial to avoid any strenuous activities involving heavy lifting, carrying, or pushing. This also includes refraining from lifting or carrying your young children and heavy handbags, especially for mothers.

How Long is Mommy Makeover Recovery Time?

Longing for your pre-baby body?

Good news: It is not a thing of the past.

Any mother can regain her youthful, pre-baby shape and appearance with a procedure called a Mommy Makeover.

One of the first questions we receive regarding Mommy Makeovers is: What should I expect during mommy makeover recovery?

Naturally, busy moms want to specifically know how long recovery will take:

  • How long will the bruising, swelling, and discomfort last?
  • When can I return to work?
  • When can I do strenuous exercise and resume normal activities?
  • When will I see complete results from my surgery?
  • Will I have a healthy recovery?
  • Who are the best Plastic Surgeons for mommy makeover

In the following article, we’ll answer all of these questions and several other common concerns regarding Mommy Makeovers and most mommy makeover patients.

Let’s first start by explaining what a Mommy Makeover is.

WHAT IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

A Mommy Makeover is a combination surgery aimed at rejuvenating a woman’s body after she is done having children.

Like many other cosmetic procedures, all Mommy Makeover procedures are unique. This is because each one is catered to the individual. Your Mommy Makeover consultation will address the specific concerns you have with your postpartum body.

Most often, a Mommy Makeover includes several of the following procedures rolled into one or two surgeries:

Which of these procedures you choose will ultimately impact your body’s recovery rate over time.

MOMMY MAKEOVER RECOVERY WEEK BY WEEK:

Week 1: The first week after your procedure is the most intense period of recovery time for mommy makeover. Your body will be in a state of shock, which means you will mostly be sleeping, eating, going to the bathroom, and moving just enough to get your blood flowing. You may experience discomfort and swelling, so be sure to make arrangements for handling your usual household routine and Dr. Sieber will prescribe pain medication to help.

Week 2: During this phase, you will start to feel sore and tender on surgical sites, but also overall tired, which may prompt you to take naps frequently. If possible, you can work from home and take brief walks. Your doctor may also clear you for driving, provided you are off all narcotic pain medication by then.

Week 3: This can be a challenging time for some women because the healing from breast augmentation surgery has slowed down, but they still feel exhausted. Others may feel more energized but frustrated with the overall progress. It’s essential to allow yourself enough time to heal correctly and rely on your family and friends for any help you may need.

Week 4: By this time, the swelling from your breast surgery should be down, and you should start feeling more energized. You can start wearing your abdominal compression binder occasionally or stop wearing it entirely, depending on your doctor’s advice.

Week 5 and 6: At this point, you will start to feel immense improvement and changes. You can resume your regular exercise, but in moderate intensity. The swelling should recede, and the incisions should be closed. However, the swelling could take up to a year to completely wear off, especially if you have had a tummy tuck, so be patient.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: WHAT TO EXPECT DURING MOMMY MAKEOVER RECOVERY TIMELINE

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding recovery from a Mommy Makeover.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DIRECTLY AFTER SURGERY?

A: After your procedure, it’s important to have a trusted friend or relative there to take you home. In most cases, Mommy Makeovers are outpatient procedures, which means you can go home on the same day of the procedure.

In terms of side effects, you will have some bruising, swelling, tenderness, and discomfort. This is all normal and to be expected. Dr. Sieber will give you care instructions for your incision sites and offer techniques and pain medications to reduce swelling, discomfort, and manage pain well.

You’ll need to adjust your lifestyle significantly at first. But over time, your body will heal, and you can return to normal. Be sure to make all of your postoperative appointments with Dr. Sieber.

Q: HOW LONG WILL THE BRUISING, SWELLING, AND DISCOMFORT LAST?

A: Standard side effects associated with the Mommy Makeover procedure include swelling, bruising, tightness, numbness, and some overall discomfort and pain. You can expect these side effects to be worst during the first week and to subside as time goes on.

Q: WILL I NEED HELP AT HOME AFTER MOMMY MAKEOVER SURGERY?

A: Yes, you will need help at home after your Mommy Makeover surgery. Ideally, family members and/or friends will be on standby to help you get around, take care of the household, and care for your kids. Small things like getting groceries and picking up small children need to be performed by others at the very beginning of your recovery.

Q: WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORK?

A: Most women can return to work within approximately two weeks to three weeks. This, of course, depends on your job. If you have a vigorous job that requires a lot of physical activity, it may take longer to return to normal work.

Q: WHEN CAN START TAKING CARE OF MY CHILDREN ON MY OWN AGAIN?

A: Keep in mind that you’ll need considerable help with your children directly after surgery, especially when they are small and require constant attention. Most women require assistance for around two weeks to four weeks, but it can take up to six weeks for you to be in full charge of your children again.

Q: WHEN CAN I START EXERCISING AGAIN?

A: You won’t be able to start exercising after your surgery for approximately six weeks. Unlike returning to a typical desk job or carrying out routine tasks around the house, exercise is particularly exerting on the body. Therefore, most patients want to give yourself adequate time to recover before doing activities such as running, swimming, or heavy lifting of weights.

Short walks, however, may be encouraged sooner rather than later. You can speak with Dr. Sieber about this at your regular check-up appointments following your cosmetic surgery.

Q: WHERE WILL MY INCISIONS BE?

A: This will depend on several factors, including which procedures you opted for and exactly how each procedure was performed. Varying techniques exist with procedures such as a breast lift and breast augmentation, for example.

Ultimately, the placement of your incisions will be up to the discretion of plastic surgeon, Dr. Sieber. Keep in mind, however, that Dr. Sieber will do his utmost to place all of your incisions in discreet locations to speed up your mommy makeover recovery.

Q: WHAT IS RECOVERY TIME LIKE IF I HAVE MORE THAN ONE SURGERY?

A: Most Mommy Makeovers can be completed in one surgical procedure. However, some women may be interested in staggering surgeries, or Dr. Sieber may deem it necessary to perform the makeover in two sessions.

If this is the case, you should expect to go through a substantial speedy and healthy recovery period both times you have plastic surgery procedures. Only the specific areas of your body that are affected will be different.

Q: WHEN WILL I SEE THE COMPLETE RESULTS ?

A: You should be able to notice some Mommy Makeover results directly following your procedure. Keep in mind, however, that bruising and swelling will be camouflaging your true figure. This can last for up to four or six weeks post surgery.

As your body heals after just a first few weeks or months, your results will become increasingly apparent. Generally speaking, at around three months, mommy makeover patients are able to see the bulk of your results and go back to all of your normal daily activities. For some women, it can take up to a full six months or even a year before the ultimate results have been completely achieved.

Q: WILL I HAVE SCARS?

A: Scars are part and parcel of the Mommy Makeover procedure. Fortunately, Dr. Sieber is skilled at making operative scars as small and indistinguishable as possible.

In most cases, they will be hidden in hard-to-see areas, such as below the bikini line. Moreover, Dr. Sieber will offer post-operative instructions for helping your scars fade as quickly as possible during your mommy makeover recovery.

How to Prepare for Liposuction: Easy Prep Tips

Even with the most rigorous, healthy diet, and exercise plan, many people struggle to get rid of unwanted stubborn fat in areas like the buttocks and abdomen. If this is a situation you’ve found yourself in, the good news is, there’s a solution!

The modern development of liposuction surgery has allowed millions of Americans to achieve the bodies they’ve always dreamed of having — minus those stubborn areas of extra bulk.

Unlike a tummy tuck, liposuction does not involve any serious invasive procedures that will leave you in recovery for weeks. It simply gets rid of unwanted fat all at once. Liposuction is safe, fast, and long-lasting.

Whether you are just starting to think about liposuction or you’ve already set a date for your first consultation appointment, there are certainly some things you need to know about this surgery. Most importantly, you’ll want to know how to prepare yourself mentally and physically for liposuction. The following is a list of some easy prep tips on how to prepare for liposuction to help you adequately prepare yourself.

But first, before we get started, let’s briefly go over what liposuction is and what you can expect.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

First made popular in the 1980s, liposuction has become one of the most requested types of plastic surgery available. The main goal of liposuction is to remove unwanted fat from the body. This unwanted fat is generally in places like the upper thigh, buttocks, abdomen, and sometimes in the arms or neck.

Removal of this fat is first achieved by pinpointing the fat deposits that are to be removed. Exactly where you would like to remove fat is something that you’ll discuss with your plastic surgeon during your consultation appointment.

Looking for a plastic surgeon to carry out the liposuction preparation for your procedure? Remember that it is essential to find a board certified doctor with extensive experience in liposuction.

During the procedure itself, you will be administered anesthesia for your comfort. Next, the area where fat is to be removed will be numbed, and a small incision will be made, or sometimes, several incisions may need to be made. This will depend on how much fat is to be removed and from what areas of the body. The doctor will then insert a device called a cannula — a slim hollow tube — into the incisions, agitating the pockets of fat and sucking them out.

DOS AND DONTS BEFORE LIPOSUCTION

As soon as you decide to go ahead with a liposuction procedure, you’ll need to take several steps to prepare yourself mentally and physically. Diligent liposuction preparation is important.

Naturally, you will need to discuss how to prepare for liposuction surgery with your individual plastic surgeon. In some cases, there may be specific steps that you need to take or not take to prepare for liposuction, depending on your unique situation. However, the following tips are generally appropriate for all liposuction patients. Carefully preparing for liposuction will help lead to a successful recovery.

1. MAKE SURE YOU’VE LOST ALL THE WEIGHT YOU CAN ON YOUR OWN.

Before you even make a consultation appointment with your plastic surgeon, it’s important that you try to lose weight on your own if you need to. You should do this the healthy way, through diet and exercise.

Patients of liposuction need to be at a target weight or healthy BMI (body mass index) before undergoing the procedure. This is something you can discuss more in detail with your surgeon, but as a general rule, you will be turned away if your BMI is too high and there is more weight that you could technically lose through diet and exercise.

If it’s just a few pounds or “problem areas” that you can’t seem to ameliorate on your own, this is where liposuction will be most helpful.

2. STOP SMOKING.

Smoking constricts your blood cells, which can cause complications during your procedure and post surgical complications after during the recovery period. It is unsafe to be a smoker in the few months before your procedure, and you’ll need to stay smoke-free for several months after your procedure as well.

In general, you should consider quitting smoking altogether as it’s simply the healthier choice, but you can also discuss a short-term smoke-free plan with your surgeon prior to your surgery.

3. SPEAK TO YOUR SURGEON ABOUT THE MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS YOU’RE TAKING.

Before going in for your consultation appointment, make a list of all the meds and herbal supplements that you take on a regular basis.

Certain meds, such as blood thinning medications, and/or supplements may react negatively to the general anesthesia, or other pain medications you are given during and after your procedure. Moreover, medicines like aspirin can thin your blood and a unique set of problems.

Tell your surgeon about all of the meds and supplements you are taking, and be prepared to modify or stop taking some or all of them, if needed. You would generally only have to do this for a short period of time.

4. ARRANGE FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE YOU HOME AND TAKE CARE FOR YOU.

After your liposuction surgery, someone will need to pick you up and take you home. That same person or another friend or loved one will need to look after you for a few days as well. Liposuction is not a surgery that will keep you in bed for weeks on end, but you may have some soreness and swelling, which will require attention and care. Be prepared for this by having someone you trust nearby who can help you if you need it.

5. SCHEDULE TIME OFF FROM WORK OR SCHOOL.

Another step you’ll need to take prior to surgery is scheduling time off from work or school. Any responsibilities you may have after your surgery will need to be postponed as you will want to put all of your focus on a healthy and safe recovery. Getting a good night’s sleep, refraining from drinking alcohol and getting plenty of rest are all keys to a successful healing process.

Many people who opt for lipo will opt to have the procedure during the summer months or during a vacation when their obligations and responsibilities are limited. Many have reported that in recovery body creams helped to soothe muscle aches. Refraining from heavy lifting and wearing comfortable clothes are a things that help the healing process. Again, limiting alcohol consumption is also important. Following these guidelines will help result in an easy liposuction recovery period.

6. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE GETTING LIPOSUCTION

This last tip is mental and emotional. Even though lipo can certainly boost your confidence and make you feel better about your physical appearance, it isn’t a magic surgery that will take all your troubles and insecurities away.

It is absolutely essential to have a realistic outlook about the results you will achieve with lipo. Remember that all plastic surgeries come with some risk of slight, discreet scarring and that the exact image of what you hope to look like post-surgery may end up being unrealistic and causing more troubles than it’s worth in the end.

SCHEDULE YOUR LIPO CONSULTATION APPOINTMENT TODAY

While diet and exercise are certainly important when it comes to maintaining a healthy physique you can be proud of, no one wants to kill themselves at the gym and deprive themselves of all the foods they love just to lose those last few stubborn pounds of fat. If you’ve been struggling to drop those vanity pounds, lipo may be able to help.

Dr. David A. Sieber is a leading cosmetic and reconstructive board certified plastic surgeon based in the San Francisco, California area. He is committed to fostering a close relationship with each and every one of his clients and would love to speak with you about lipo or any other procedures you are considering. What Are The Steps of a Tummy Tuck Procedure?

Despite a strict diet and regular exercise, many men and women still struggle with loose sagging skin and fat around the abdomen. Coupled with stretch marks and fat deposits, these issues cause many individuals to seek the benefits of a tummy tuck.

In the following article, we’ll define what a tummy tuck is and outline the steps of this extremely common procedure.

TUMMY TUCK SAN FRANCISCO

WHAT IS A TUMMY TUCK?

tummy tuck — also known as abdominoplasty — is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures available. The procedure removes excess skin and, in some cases, small amounts of excess fat from the abdominal region. It also tightens weak abdominal muscles.

Abdominoplasty is most common among women who have had multiple pregnancies and who are done having children and individuals who have experienced drastic and significant weight loss and/or weight gain.

HOW LONG DOES A TUMMY TUCK SURGERY TAKE?

The procedure itself takes several hours. This time may vary, however, and largely depends on whether the patient is having liposuction performed and the extent to which fatty tissue that must be removed.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS OF A TUMMY TUCK?

Let’s go over each of the major surgery steps involved in tummy tuck surgery:

1. PREPARE FOR SURGERY SEVERAL WEEKS PRIOR

Two weeks before the date of your surgery, your surgeon will have you cease taking any medications or supplements that may cause increased bleeding during and after surgery.

They will also ask that you stop smoking if you are a smoker, and other pre-surgery steps may need to be taken as well (such as maintaining a stable weight) — all of which will be discussed with you ahead of time.

Make sure that you take time off from work or school for your surgery and recovery time. You can get an idea of how long this period will need to be by talking with your surgeon.

You’ll also need to make sure someone responsible who you trust can be there after your surgery to take you home. Most tummy tucks are outpatient procedures, which means you’ll be able to go home the same day as your surgery.

2. MEET WITH YOUR SURGEON ON THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE

On the day of your procedure, you will be signed in and taken into a presurgical room. There, nurses will help you prepare for the procedure. You will also have a chance to meet with your surgeon and ask any additional questions.

3. ANESTHESIA

Once you have been taken to the operating room, the first step will be to administer anesthesia for your own comfort.

During a full tummy tuck, you may be completely asleep under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia may be administered while you are sedated, relaxed, and comfortable.

4. INCISIONS

Your surgeon will make an initial horizontal incision just above the pubic area, low enough to be hidden by underwear and bathing suits. With a full tummy tuck, an additional incision will be made around the belly button.

5. ABDOMINAL MUSCLE REPAIR

Your surgeon will then need to lift the abdominal skin upward so that the abdominal muscles are exposed. At this point, they can repair and tighten these muscles by pulling them together. The result will be a smaller waistline and a flatter, smoother abdominal wall contour.

6. TIGHTENING OF SKIN AND REMOVAL OF EXCESS SKIN AND FAT

Once the abdominal muscles have been repaired, your surgeon will pull the upper abdominal skin down, pulling the excess skin beyond the incision point near the pubic area. This will remove excess skin and fat that will be trimmed off. The bellybutton will be reinserted into the new opening over its original position and sutured into place.

7. INCISION CLOSURE

Finally, your surgeon will close the incisions with the use of sutures as well as tapes, skin adhesives, or clips.

ADDING LIPOSUCTION TO A TUMMY TUCK

Many patients opt to add liposuction to their tummy tuck. This is something you can discuss with your plastic surgeon at your consultation appointment. Not all patients who would benefit from a tummy tuck would benefit from liposuction, but it is quite common to have both procedures performed during the same cosmetic surgery.

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes pockets of excess fat from areas like the lower abdomen back, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, and chin and neck. During the procedure, a thin tube (called a cannula) is used to agitate and remove excess fat through small incisions made in the target areas.

While liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure (only a small amount of excess fat should be removed via liposuction), it can provide enhanced results when combined with a tummy tuck. In order to qualify for liposuction — and in many cases a tummy tuck — patients should be at or within close range of their target weight.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING RECOVERY FROM A TUMMY TUCK

Swelling is very normal after undergoing a tummy tuck. To reduce swelling and support the affected area, your surgeon will have you wear compression garments as well as dressings and bandages at the beginning of your recovery period. In some cases, short-term use drainage tubes may be necessary to drain out excess fluid.

Some pain and discomfort may accompany the healing process. Your surgeon can prescribe pain medications and recommend other helpful steps to mitigate discomfort and aid in the process of healing.

You’ll meet with your surgeon several times during your recovery. You surgeon will be available to answer any questions you may have about your tummy tuck scar. After a time, the bandages and wraps can be removed, and as your recovery progresses, your surgeon will let you know when you can return to normal activities such as light physical exercise, work, and more.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

How painful is a tummy tuck?

Like any surgical procedure, it’s normal to experience some discomfort during the process, as the body initiates its healing journey.

How long does it take to recover from tummy tuck?

Although a tummy tuck’s complete recovery process can span up to six months, the initial post-surgery recovery typically lasts for two to four weeks.

When can I return to work after a tummy tuck procedure?

Many people are able to resume work within two weeks and gradually reintroduce their regular exercise routines between three to five weeks after the procedure. It’s important to bear in mind that your recovery pace should be based on your individual needs, so be sure to allow yourself the necessary rest.

Is tummy tuck a major surgery?

Tummy tucks involve several surgical aspects. While most individuals can typically resume their daily activities within two weeks, complete recovery often extends over several weeks.

The enduring success of the procedure hinges on the stability of your weight. It’s worth noting that losing more than 15 pounds can impact the outcome.

What is a mini tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck procedure is a body contouring procedure designed to eliminate modest amounts of surplus skin and fat from the lower abdominal area. This procedure differs from a full tummy tuck as it doesn’t involve incisions around the belly button or address muscle tightening above the belly button.

Do I Need a Tummy Tuck or Lipo

Unhappy with the state of your midsection? You’re not alone.

Millions of men and women struggle with excess abdominal fat that they just can’t seem to get rid of. Often, the problem involves excess skin as well unwanted fat.

These issues do more than affect a person’s self-confidence. Sagging skin, for one, can make exercise problematic. It can be difficult to fit into clothes or find undergarments that feel comfortable. Moreover, excess belly fat has been linked to higher rates of morbidity when related to health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.

PLASTIC SURGERY OR LIFESTYLE CHANGES?

Naturally, a situation like this should prompt you to look at your diet and lifestyle. A nutritious diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can go a long way at slimming your waistline and improving your overall health. Likewise, getting regular exercise — even if it’s just 15 minutes a day — can help as well.

Still, we all know that diet and exercise can only go so far. What happens when you’ve been paying attention to what you eat and your physical activity and you’re still struggling with annoying abdominal fat and/or skin around the waist?

SPEAKING TO A PLASTIC SURGEON ABOUT YOUR OPTIONS

Plastic surgery has come a long way over the past decade. Today, there are more procedures than ever designed to help you achieve your desired silhouette and boost your confidence.

As far as abdominal fat removal and extra skin around the waist goes, patients usually have two options: tummy tucks or liposuction.

A lot of patients know this already, but they may not know which cosmetic procedure is best for them. While it’s always good to consult directly with a plastic surgeon about your option, we can take a look at each surgery individually right now.

Up ahead, we’ll examine the key differences and similarities between tummy tucks and liposuction to help you decide which procedure will be best for you.

TUMMY TUCKS VS. LIPOSUCTION

TUMMY TUCKS

Of the two procedures — tummy tucks and liposuction — tummy tucks tend to be more invasive. Larger incisions must be made so that skin can be removed, and small deposits of excess fat cells are generally removed as well.

Even though tummy tucks can target fat, they are primarily targeted at individuals who have excess skin that they want to get rid of or belly button issues. Often, candidates for tummy tucks have excess skin because they have recently lost a significant amount of weight — 50 pounds or more.

Alternatively, they may be mothers who have gone through one or more pregnancies and are now finished having children and are looking to find their shape again. Pregnancy can cause a separation of the stomach muscles (diastasis recti) as well as loose skin that doesn’t bounce back to its original shape.

With a tummy tuck, a flat midsection can be restored when your plastic surgeon repairs your stomach muscles (rectus abdominis), removes excess skin, and gets rid of small excess fat deposits.

The procedure involves making incision(s) near the pubic bone and sometimes near the navel to remove excess fat in the lower abdomen. The abdominal muscles are restructured, and the skin is then stretched tight over the abdominal, and the excess is cut off. The belly button is relocated if necessary, and the incisions are closed.

LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction tends to be less invasive than a tummy tuck. This procedure is aimed at individuals who do not have excess skin to remove but instead want to get rid of stubborn fat deposits, which may be located on the abdomen and elsewhere. For example, liposuction can also be performed on the upper arms, the thighs, the buttocks, etc.

Liposuction is not for individuals who have a significant amount of weight to lose. Liposuction patients who are overweight or obese should address this issue safely through diet and exercise, if possible. Of course, other options may be discussed with patients’ general practitioners as well.

Still, liposuction can help with removing those last few pounds after significant weight loss (or those that have simply crept on over time despite massive weight loss and your best efforts).

The liposuction procedure often takes several sessions. Small incisions are made near the sites where fat is to be removed. A thin metal tube called a cannula is then inserted by your plastic surgeon into the incisions.

Through various methods, the fat and fatty tissue will be agitated for easier removal through the cannula. The incisions will then be closed up.

DO I NEED A TUMMY TUCK OR LIPO

When deciding between a tummy tuck or liposuction, likely the biggest factor will be whether or not you need remove excess skin To be sure, liposuction is often used in conjunction with tummy tucks to remove both excess fat and excess skin. But if you don’t need any excess skin to be removed, liposuction alone is probably your answer.

Beyond this factor, you should be looking at considerations such as the overall cost of surgery, recovery time, and your overall lifestyle. Keep in mind as long as you continue on with a healthy lifestyle, the results of both surgeries should be permanent.

On the other hand, results are not always guaranteed if you allow excess fat to creep on over time. For this reason, plastic surgeons emphasize the importance of continuing on with a healthy diet and regular exercise once patients are cleared for movement after surgery
