As with any surgical procedure, all patients naturally want the best possible doctor with the most amazing credentials, experience, and expertise. But again, this is especially true when it comes to plastic surgeons.

Here are the top considerations you should make when searching for the best plastic surgeon for your BBL procedure.

1. Are they board-certified?

You’ve probably heard that you should always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, but what does this classification actually mean, and why is it so important to have your plastic surgeon be board-certified?

First off, it’s important to remember that plastic surgeons are slightly different than traditional surgeons. For example, if you need to have heart surgery, you shouldn’t have to check with your general practitioner or the surgeon themselves to see whether the surgeon is board-certified. It should go without saying because you would have been referred to this surgeon by your doctor or an emergency service (both of whom would have already “okayed” the board-certification status of the surgeon). In addition, the surgeon would have to be in-network under your health insurance. Both of these factors mean there’s no way you’d have to worry about the board-certification status of your surgeon.

Plastic surgery, on the other hand, is slightly outside of the traditional health system and, therefore, different when it comes to board-certification status. This means that there may be some individuals who are actually not board-certified, but practicing cosmetic procedures nonetheless. You won’t have the insurance company or your doctor to check for certification, however, so the responsibility is on you to do the checking.

What does it mean to be “board-certified”?

When a plastic surgeon is board-certified, it means that they have been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, or ABPS.

Remember that not every professional who can perform plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures will be board-certified. In fact, general physicians who have a state medical board medical license in their practicing state can often technically perform plastic surgery. As a general rule, however, it is wise to only go with plastic surgeons who have been board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Also, keep in mind that plastic surgeons can be double board-certified as well. Dr. Sieber, for example, is double board-certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

2. Do you like their past work?

Just as it is critical to ensure that your plastic surgeon is board-certified, it is also crucial to know that you like the way your plastic surgeon works. That is, when you look at the before and after pictures of their past procedures, do you like the way the “after” pictures look? When examining the Brazilian butt lift pictures, specifically, would you like to look the way the “results” look?

To be sure, every individual body is different, and individuals have different goals when it comes to the outcome of their plastic surgeries. On the other hand, examining a surgeon’s before and after gallery is the perfect way to know whether they have the skills necessary to perform your own procedure to your liking. After all, it is highly unlikely that you will be satisfied with the work of a plastic surgeon if you don’t find any of their “after” pictures pleasing.

When you begin to examine a surgeon’s before and after photos, pay close attention to individuals who have a body type close to yours. In other words, take a look at the before photos and find someone who looks the way you do now.

What did the surgeon do with the “problem areas” on these individuals? Do you like the outcome? Is the contouring smooth and pleasing? Can you see the scars?

3. Do they have the proper experience?

This should go without saying, but you also want to make sure that your plastic surgeon has experience performing Brazilian butt lifts, specifically. Even if they have done many other types of surgery for many years, you want them to be extremely familiar with BBLs.

To prove this, you should see numerous before and after examples in their patient galleries, and the surgeon themselves should be able to discuss the procedure at length with you — explaining his or her experience in detail.

Don’t be afraid to ask about this when you meet with your surgeon. The Brazilian butt lift is a relatively new procedure, so not every surgeon has extensive experience with it.
