Vaser High Definition Liposuction

San Francisco Vaser High Definition Liposuction

Whether due to genetics or age, we all struggle with certain areas on the body that don’t seem to respond to diet or exercise. Traditional liposuction can remove areas of fat, but Vaser High Definition Liposuction is a breakthrough technology that uses ultrasound energy to effectively remove fat to define underlying muscles. Removing unwanted pockets of fat, defines the shape of your body and restores more ideal proportions. It specifically targets pockets of fat overlying muscle groups such as the upper arms, chest, abdomen, buttock, back, flanks, and thighs. Vaser High Definition Liposuction is ideal in those patients who only need small areas of fat removed for toning and contouring.

How Does Vaser Liposuction Work?

Vaser is state of the art technology that stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Vaser uses ultrasonic energy to dislodge fat cells to be removed through a process called cavitation. In the body, fat cells are connected to each other through connective tissue. The Vaser uses high frequency resonant ultrasonic energy to shake the bunch, causing the fat cells to fall off while leaving this important connective tissue intact.

During the procedure, the area to be treated is filled with a medical solution. The ultrasound energy from the Vaser Lipo instrument gently breaks up the fat from the connective tissue, making the fat soft like butter. This consistency of the fat allows it to be removed much more easily without aggressive suctioning. The fat is separated from the nerves and blood vessels, leaving the surrounding tissue intact and undisturbed. This process allows for less trauma, meaning less bruising and swelling in the treatment areas.

What are the Advantages of Vaser Liposuction

Vaser hi-def liposuction is advantageous to traditional liposuction because it removes the deep layers of fat as well as the fat at the superficial and subdermal layers. This means that pockets of fat between the skin and the muscles can be reached and removed. This is a crucial factor in the way hi-def lipo sculpts the body, instead of simply removing deep layers of fat.

The benefits of Vaser liposuction include:

  • Enhanced skin retraction compared to traditional liposuction, delivering smooth results
  • Can treat multiple areas over most of the body in a single procedure
  • Vaser technology differentiates between fat and connective tissue for a more gentle procedure than traditional liposuction, so there is no damage to blood vessels and nerves and less pain, swelling and downtime
  • Numerous tools allow for individualized treatments based on patient’s ideal aesthetic outcome
  • Fat can be removed from one area of the body and be used to shape and sculpt other areas of the body, such as the breasts, buttocks, face, or pecs
  • Can precisely sculpt treated areas, giving an athletic muscle tone and definition

What is High-Definition Liposuction?

High definition (hi-def) liposuction is an advanced liposculpting procedure that strategically sculpts the body by removing fat in problem areas while at the same time exposing and highlighting important muscle groups in the body to create natural contours. A youthful body is 3 dimensional, composed of light and shadows. If traditional liposuction is like painting with a broad brush, Vaser high-definition liposuction is more akin to painting with a fine brush.

Vaser High-Definition Laser Technique

In its early days, liposuction was performed to uniformly remove fat from areas of the body. Newer techniques such as Vaser assisted liposuction allows for creation of a realistic, 3-dimensional shape to the treated areas. This is accomplished by treating superficial and deep layers of fat together with smooth transitions between the two for a more natural and muscular appearance.

VAL allows precise pockets of fat to be removed very closely to the skin and directly over the muscles. Removal of these small deposits exposes natural muscular contours which were not visible before. Because much of this fat is located alongside various muscle groups, its removal helps to create more muscular definition.

Dr. David Sieber a San Francisco plastic surgeon spent time with the pioneer of high definition liposuction, Dr. Alfredo Hoyos, in Colombia to learn his techniques for delivering incredible results. During your consultation, Dr. Sieber will work with you to understand your goals for the procedure.

Which Areas of the Body Can Be Treated?

High definition liposuction is not only about treating specific areas of the body, such as the abdominals or flanks, but is instead about treating the entire body to create a cohesive and natural looking appearance.

As a part of high definition procedures, patients most commonly have liposuction of the arms, chest, abdomen, back, flanks, and thighs. The Vaser sculpting tools can remove fat in certain places to sculpt underlying muscles. Six-pack, obliques, lats, pecs, biceps, triceps, and deltoids are all muscles that can be highlighted.

As much as liposculpting is about removing fat, it’s also about what you leave behind to create precise highlights and shadows on the skin. That’s why fat transfer is utilized in conjunction with liposuction. Men commonly have fat transferred to their shoulders, chest, and buttocks to create a more muscular appearance.

Women have fat transferred to their buttocks and sometimes breasts to augment the size and reshape to the area. In conjunction with hi-def liposuction, women may also choose to undergo a breast augmentation, breast lift, and/or a tummy tuck at the same time.

The result of hi-def liposuction is a completely transformed and sculpted body.

Preparing for Hi-Def Liposuction

Preparing before your surgery can make a big impact on your surgery outcome. It can also help to reduce the risk of complications and make for a smoother recovery.

Certain medications and supplements, such as aspirin, Ibuprofen, St. John’s wort, and Vitamin E, can act as blood thinners and may cause excessive bruising and bleeding. They should be discontinued for at least two weeks prior to surgery. Please reference our list of medications and supplements to avoid, and make sure to check with your doctor before stopping any medications.

If you smoke or use nicotine products, it’s absolutely critical that you stop as soon as possible, but at a minimum of four weeks before and for four weeks after surgery. Nicotine restricts blood vessels and impairs circulation, which can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.

You should get in the habit of drinking lots of water, eating healthy, and exercising- not only to get your body strong and in a position to heal more quickly, but to have enough nutrients in store so that your body has the energy it needs to recover.

Prior to your surgery, you should also arrange to have someone take you to your surgery and to drive you back. And a caretaker will need to be with you the first few days. Getting your home ready will also help you to have a less stressful and more comfortable recovery. For example, it’s a good idea to take care of chores, stock your fridge with easy to eat snacks and meals, and to get your recovery area ready with extra pillows and whatever else you may need.

Recovery from Hi-Def Liposuction

The recovery process is different for everyone. The number of areas of the body that were treated is also a factor that determines total recovery time and how much time away from work and usual activities you may need. You should expect to take at least one week off from work.

Recovery from hi-def surgery will follow a precisely prescribed post-op plan. Immediately after surgery, you will be placed into a compression garment. Wearing a compression garment is important because after fat is removed from the body, your body will want to fill that space with fluid. Compression helps to reduce swelling and the buildup of fluid.

The compression garment should not be taken off at all for the first two days after surgery. After two days, you may remove the compression garment to take a shower, but it should be put back on right after. You’ll wear compression for the first 4 weeks after surgery.

You will have drains placed during surgery to help remove unwanted fluid from beneath the skin. Extra tumescent fluid, which may be blood tinged, will drain for the first few days.

You can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort for the first few days following surgery. It’s very normal for the swelling to get slightly worse before beginning to improve. Wearing your compression garments and foam will help keep the swelling down. It’s also completely normal to feel numbness in the areas that were treated. Sensation will return back to normal over time.

Dr. Sieber highly recommends working with a lymphatic massage therapist to help ensure the best possible outcome after surgery This post operative massage is critical to maximize your results and will start after your first postoperative visit.

You will need to refrain from any vigorous activity for the first 2 weeks. Starting activities too soon after surgery may put you at risk for bleeding. You may begin to perform light exercise two weeks after your surgery, and may gradually increase your activity as you tolerate.

FAQs

Q: Who is a good candidate for Vaser Hi-Def Liposuction?

A: Vaser Hi-Def Lipo is best suited for those who are looking to contour and sculpt the body, instead of overall fat reduction. Liposuction is not meant for weight loss or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. The best candidates are patients who are in good health and good skin elasticity, no excess skin, non smokers, and close to their ideal weight with a BMI <30. Ideal candidates are typically active and have good muscle tone, but despite exercising and eating well, they still have stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise.

Q: Are the results permanent?

A: Patients will keep the effects of hi-def as long as they maintain a healthy, stable weight. Any weight loss, weight gain, pregnancy, or childbirth after the procedure will alter the results. Because adult fat cells do not regrow, areas which were treated should maintain their appearance with time. However, adjacent fat cells in untreated areas can still grow with weight gain after the procedure. Patients are encouraged to follow a healthy lifestyle, including an active lifestyle and a nutritious diet to maintain their sculpted appearance.

Q: What is the difference between standard liposuction and Hi-def lipo?

A: Vaser hi-def liposuction takes standard liposuction to the next level of results. During traditional liposuction, fat is typically uniformly removed from areas of the body. Hi-def lipo is commonly referred to as liposculpture because as fat is removed in certain areas, a little is left in others.

This strategic removal of fat allows Dr. Sieber to expose the underlying muscles like the abs, pecs, back, and shoulders, while slimming the waist and torso. It can make an already fit person appear to have a more sculpted and athletic appearance.

Q: What kind of results can one expect from having Vaser High Definition Liposuction?

A: After hi-def liposuction, a thin layer of fat will be left in areas that naturally have muscles underneath such as the shoulders, chest, arms, and abs. This will be juxtaposed to areas where fat is completely removed, creating highlights and shadows to enhance your natural anatomy. This means more defined arms, shoulders, abdomen, back, legs, and calves.

Q: How long will I have to wear compression after surgery?

A: Compression is important after liposuction because it helps to reduce and minimize postoperative swelling and bruising. Because it produces constant pressure over the skin it also helps to smooth the skin and prevent contour irregularities.

Dr. Sieber recommends wearing a compression garment 24 hours a day (ok to remove it to shower) for the first 4 weeks after surgery, then continue the compression garment for an additional 8 weeks wearing it for 12 hours a day (either during the day or while sleeping).

Q: Are lymphatic massages really necessary?

A: The short answer is yes! lymphatic massages will help to remove any excess fluid from the tissue, reducing the time you will experience swelling and expediting healing. Liposuction can disturb the lymphatic system, causing the pooling of lymphatic fluids. Massage helps to return this fluid back into the circulation where it belongs.

Massages also help to prevent the formation of scar tissue. The motion of the massaging also helps to smooth out the skin, leading to a better long term result.
