What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is a component of our blood that contains special proteins that support healing and cell growth. The process requires blood to be drawn from the patient. The blood is then put into a centrifuge which spins at high speeds, separating the blood components. Following this step, the PRP is injected into the patient’s facial area or into their scalp. The purpose of PRP injections is to stimulate new and healthy cell growth.

What PRP Treats?

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Skin sagging and laxity
  • Hyperpigmentation and melasmay
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Brown spots and redness
  • Acne scars and surgical scars

PRP Facial with Microneedling

PRP continues to evolve as an important treatment modality in cosmetic dermatology and has a variety of applications for skin and hair. Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy which works synergistically when combined with PRP to tackle the signs of aging and sun damage. Since PRP helps with healing and provides more nutrients to the skin’s cells, greater results can be obtained when combined with microneedling. This combination treatment leads to further improved skin texture, decreased fine lines and wrinkles, a reduction in the appearance of acne scars and can also decrease the appearance of enlarged pores than microneedling alone. The expected recovery and post-care is the same as standard microneedling.

PRP Scalp Therapy For Hair Restoration

PRP Scalp therapy is another common form of PRP injections that many have found to be beneficial. The process for the procedure is similar to that of the facial, where blood is taken from the patient, and then spun rapidly in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. However, in this particular procedure, the PRP is injected into the scalp in order to stimulate hair follicles, slow the rate of hair loss and increase the thickness of the hair shaft.

Recovery From PRP Scalp Therapy Procedure

It is normal to experience some soreness/discomfort, temporary redness and swelling after the treatment for 2-5 days. You may also have a headache for up to a day afterward. Your post-care regimen will include avoiding vigorous exercise, sun and heat exposure. You should also minimize the use of certain hair products and styling aids on the same day as your treatment.

3-6 treatments is typically recommended spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by a maintenance regimen. Talk to your practitioner about your goals and they can advise you on the best treatment regimen.

Results will vary depending on your treatment goals and the plan you set forth with your provider. You can expect an improvement in about 3-4 months. It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle which includes eating a balanced diet and not smoking or using other nicotine products, which can disrupt the blood supply your hair needs to grow.

Differing levels of treatment may affect the sensations you feel during treatment, but most patients find the treatment experience tolerable with topical or injectable numbing, which can help to reduce any discomfort associated with this treatment.
