Years of sun exposure can leave your skin looking dry and damaged. UV rays activate pigment-producing cells in the skin which causes brown spots. Furthermore, UV rays degrade collagen which leads to fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. Dr. David Sieber and his team of experienced providers specializes in the treatment to remove these blemishes on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms, and legs using BBL Heroic photo facial—offered at Sieber Plastic Surgery.
BBL is a form of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which works by directly targeting the pigment within your skin. During the procedure, the provider will run a handheld device over the skin in your treatment area. The device emits specific pulses of light depending on what’s being treated. The procedure only takes 15–45 minutes, and can be performed anywhere on the body where pigment exists. If your pigment is severe, you may require several treatments for fully realized results. All of this will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation.
Please avoid sunless tanning products (including self-tanners) on the treated area for at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment. Because BBL cannot distinguish between a natural tan and abnormal pigmentation, avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks before treatment to prevent complications and ensure the best results.
Discontinue active skincare ingredients such as AHAs, BHAs, retinoids (including tretinoin and retinol), hydroquinone, and similar products for 3 days before your appointment.
Tell your provider if you are taking any photosensitizing medications prior to your appointment.
After treatment, avoid direct sun exposure and situations that cause the body to overheat—such as hot showers, saunas, or heated exercise classes—for 3 days.
You may experience a little burning (like a mild sunburn) or redness for the first 24 hours post-procedure. Immediately after treatment, you’ll notice that any areas of pigment will look darker in color, similar to coffee grinds. It is important not to scratch or exfoliate these areas—allow them to fall off naturally. These spots can be covered with makeup and are a sign that the treatment was effective.
The “coffee grinds” typically fall off within 4–7 days, depending on the severity of brown spots present before treatment. With subsequent sessions, fewer of these spots will appear, as there will be less pigment to treat. Once the darkened areas shed, healthier and more even-toned skin will be revealed.
A cool gel is first applied to the treatment area, then a chilled applicator is placed on the skin to deliver the light therapy. The treatment should last about 15-30 minutes.
Patients vary in their pain tolerances. Most patients find this treatment to be very tolerable, while others may find the sensation slightly uncomfortable, especially if strong settings are needed for targeted concerns. If doing BBL with another procedure like Moxi, Halo or Microneedling, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area. Most patients only doing the BBL Heroic treatment do not require numbing cream and find the treatment to be quick and easy.
There is little to none downtime with BBL. If someone has a lot of brown spots, the darker coffee grinds could be considered downtime. You can use makeup to conceal them but you will still be able to exercise and work after a treatment. If someone is doing BBL for redness, there will be no downtime.
Complexion (reds and browns) Brown spots like sunspots, age spots, liver spots, hyperpigmentation and melasma. Red spots like redness, flushing, rosacea and broken blood vessels.
