What Is a Medical Grade Facial?

Medical-grade facials utilize a combination of medical-grade tools and a customized treatment plan to remove dead skin cells and address various concerns.

While they begin similarly to spa facials, they can address skin concerns on a deeper level to encourage healthy skin.

For example, medical-grade peels using unbuffered acids are often used during medical-grade facials, in addition to tools that stimulate collagen production.

Types of Medical Grade Facials Offered at Sieber Plastic Surgery

At Sieber Plastic Surgery, we offer several types of medical facials. Our team will also work with you to customize a medical facial treatment plan based on your goals, such as achieving smooth skin, reducing acne scars, evening out skin tone, and anything else required to achieve greater skin health.

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning uses a small blade on dry skin to remove unwanted facial hair, including fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It also encourages skin cell renewal, which helps fade acne scars and reveal more youthful and healthy skin.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels use specific acid-based solutions to treat and brighten the skin tone. Chemical peel treatments are typically administered to smooth the skin and improve texture, as well as to treat fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, and other skin imperfections.

It also stimulates collagen production, which further helps reduce signs of aging.

Facial Waxing

Facial waxing is a very common practice used to move unwanted hair with long-lasting results. In addition to removing facial hair, waxing removes dead skin cells, leaving you smoother, glowing skin. It also stimulates collagen production.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Medical Grade Facials?

Because medical facials are highly customizable, they can address virtually all types of skin and skin concerns. Therefore, most people are excellent candidates for medical facials.

However, as with any specialized aesthetic treatment, some things may render an individual an undesirable candidate for the procedures. For example, certain medications that cause excess skin sensitivity will likely exclude you from any resurfacing treatment.

If you’re pregnant, have a heart condition, allergies, or any other underlying conditions, it is important to notify us before we get started with any medical-grade products and tools.

What Are the Key Benefits of Medical Facials?

Medical facials are associated with several benefits, including:

  • Addressing your individual skin issues, from acne to redness to aging skin
  • Long-lasting results as each type of treatment penetrates deeper into the skin
  • Improved skin cycle and circulation
  • Minimal downtime after treatments
  • Healthier skin

Our experienced team will create a customized treatment plan to address your specific skin issues to achieve long-lasting skin glowing results!

What Can Medical Grade Facials Do for Your Skin?

A medical facial uses medical-grade products to deep cleanse and exfoliate dead skin cells. Depending on the other treatments you require, medical aestheticians will ensure your medical facial addresses common concerns such as skin aging, redness, hyperpigmentation, acne, scarring, and more.

When Is the Best Time to Get a Medical Grade Facial?

When and how often you should have medical facial procedures depends on various factors, such as skin problems and appearance goals. Most people benefit from scheduling a series of medical-grade facials spaced four to six weeks apart.

How Does a Medical Grade Facial Differ From a Spa Facial?

Spa facials and medical facials primarily differ in the type of treatments used and how deeply they penetrate the skin. Spa facials are typically the same for most clients as they work to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize the skin.

Medical-grade facials Sieber Plastic Surgery go beyond procedures that cleanse and exfoliate the skin. They are designed to provide advanced skincare that targets and impacts specific concerns.
One main difference is also the quality of products used during the treatment. We use medical-grade skincare products that contain stronger and more effective ingredients.

Who Administers the Medical Facial, and What Is Their Typical Background?

Medical aestheticians are the professionals who administer medical-grade facials. They will also typically consult with you to customize your treatment plan.

Avéli San Francisco Bay Area

Cellulite has long been a battle waged by women of all shapes and sizes. Creams, serums, massage tools, and other so-called silver bullets frequently claim to eradicate dimples and bumps caused by cellulite. But if you’ve tried any of them, you know that actual solutions are few and far between … until now.

A revolutionary new device called Avéli has recently been cleared by the FDA and proven safe and effective for reducing the appearance of cellulite on the buttocks and thighs.

About Dr. David Sieber

Dr. Sieber, a double board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, graduated from Loyola University-Stritch School of Medicine and completed a five-year residency in general surgery at Loyola University Medical Center.

Dr. Sieber went on to become certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has done thousands of cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries over the last six years of practice.

What Is Avéli?

Avéli cellulite treatment is a long-term treatment for cellulite reduction on the buttocks and thighs. It is minimally invasive.

Avéli targets the underlying cause of cellulite and takes an anatomical approach to improving cellulite (goes beneath the skin) as opposed to a topical or surface-level approach.

The device is wand-like in appearance, and its main use is to actually cut (release) the connective fibrous bands that cause cellulite (more on this below under the heading, “What Is Cellulite?”).

Are You a Good Candidate for Avéli?

The best candidates for Avéli are frustrated with moderate to severe cellulite on their buttocks and thighs. Cellulite will appear as bumpy, lumpy, and dimpled skin.

Sometimes, with dieting and exercise (especially strength training), cellulite can disappear on its own. However, even the fittest of the fit can struggle with cellulite. It’s often a genetic issue.

It’s best if patients have good skin elasticity and not a lot of excess fat near the treatment areas. Localized fat can be treated with liposuction.

In addition to the above, optimal candidates for Avéli cellulite treatment should:

  • Be at a healthy weight (healthy BMI or body mass index)
  • Not be pregnant
  • Not smoke
  • Be in good health overall

What Is Cellulite?

One of the most common skin conditions among adult women is cellulite. In fact, nine out of ten women are affected by the dimpled flesh that characterizes it.

Cellulite can make individuals feel self-conscious when exercising or going to the beach or a pool. It can detract from a person’s overall confidence and self-esteem and may also complicate intimacy for some.

The good news is — despite its unpopularity — cellulite is harmless. It is unrelated to any underlying medical conditions and should not cause further medical issues over time.

So, what causes cellulite?

The science tells us it’s the presence of septa that causes cellulite. Septa are fibrous bands located beneath the skin. Some of these bands get smaller and stiffer over time, essentially pulling the skin from below like the string of a balloon. Each septa band that tightens and pulls down on the skin above creates a cellulite dimple.

The Avéli technique essentially cuts these bands, releasing their tension so that the patient’s cellulite dimples disappear and smooth out.

How to Get Rid of Cellulite: The Avéli Technique

No other cellulite treatment is like Avéli. While other treatments approach cellulite from the top down, Avéli goes below the surface of the skin to physically cut (release) the septa bands that cause cellulite.

The procedure begins with local anesthesia. After the buttocks and/or thighs have been sufficiently numbed, a few small incisions will be made around the treatment area.

The Avéli Precision Cellulite Release Device will then be inserted into these incisions. A light at the end of the device will guide Dr. Sieber as he locates the internal septa bands that correspond to the surface-level dimples.

Once a septa band has been located, a small arm will then be deployed at the end of the device. Dr. Sieber will pull back on the device, and as he does so, a blade will hook and cut the septa band, visibly releasing the dimple, which should immediately smooth out.

Preparing for Avéli

Once you know you want to try Avéli, it’s important to book a consultation appointment with Dr. Sieber. He will tell you whether you’re a good candidate and ask you some questions about your medical history. He will also perform a physical exam and then discuss your options with you.

After booking your surgery, plan for a short downtime after the surgery. Most patients will need to take at least one or two days off work, although some patients may feel comfortable going back to work the next day.

On the day of your procedure, Dr. Sieber may mark your body so that he has a good understanding of the areas he’ll be targeting. Patients are able to treat as many dimples as they like. Still, it’s important that you discuss the expected extent of your procedure prior to the surgery date.

After all of the target septa bands have been released, the incisions will be closed up, and bandages will be placed over the treatment area.

Recovery From Avéli

After your Avéli treatment, the treatment area will be bandaged. You will be sent to a recovery room for a short time.

Staff will ensure you are doing well during your initial recovery, and then you will be discharged to return home. Because Avéli is an outpatient procedure, you may go home on the same day as your surgery.

The vast majority of patients will not need much time at all to return to their normal activities after their procedure. You should be cleared to return to school or work within one to two days.

Bruising, swelling, and some slight discomfort are all normal side effects during the first week of recovery. Swelling, which will be the last symptom to linger, may last for several more weeks and months.

During your recovery, be sure to have patience. It will take time to see your results — sometimes up to three months. Wear your compression garments, attend all of your follow-up appointments, avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise, and stay out of the sun to achieve optimal results.

Avéli Cost San Francisco

Avéli generally costs between $3,000 and $6,000 per treatment. You can have as many septa bands released during one treatment as you like, but do keep in mind that more extensive treatment may increase the cost of Avéli.

Other factors that will influence your Avéli cost include who your surgeon is and where they are located, in what facility you undergo the procedure, and what you need to spend on aftercare and recovery care (including any medications).

Avéli Frequently Asked Questions

The presence of fibrous septa bands beneath the skin is the source of cellulite in most patients. It’s unknown why some people are predisposed to it and others are not.

In fact, many people have a genetic predisposition for cellulite. Still, lack of exercise, high amounts of body fat, and aging can also cause or exacerbate cellulite.

Yes. Prior to the popularity of Avéli, QWO was the preferred method of cellulite treatment in many plastic surgeons’ offices. QWO also targeted septa bands beneath the skin, but it was an injectable, not an invasive device.

Although QWO was approved by the FDA, it was found to have significant side effects, including prolonged bruising and changes in skin color that wouldn’t go away. It was subsequently pulled from the shelves.

While some claims have been made that changes in diet and an increase in exercise can get rid of cellulite naturally, this is up for debate. Certainly, the loss of excess body fat may reduce the appearance of cellulite in some cases.

Furthermore, increasing the presence of muscle on your buttocks and thighs (primarily through weight lifting and strength training) may also improve cellulite in these locations.

However, for many, no amount of healthy living and weight maintenance can get rid of cellulite. For some, it’s simply something caused by genetics and cannot be improved without a proven-effective treatment like Avéli.

Most patients will pay between $3,000 and $6,000 or more for Avéli in the San Francisco area. To get an accurate cost estimate, however, it’s important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sieber.

PRP

San Francisco PRP

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is a component of our blood that contains special proteins that support healing and cell growth. The process requires blood to be drawn from the patient. The blood is then put into a centrifuge which spins at high speeds, separating the blood components. Following this step, the PRP is injected into the patient’s facial area or into their scalp. The purpose of PRP injections is to stimulate new and healthy cell growth.

PRP Facial with Microneedling

PRPPRP continues to evolve as an important treatment modality in cosmetic dermatology and has a variety of applications for skin and hair. Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy which works synergistically when combined with PRP to tackle the signs of aging and sun damage. Since PRP helps with healing and provides more nutrients to the skin’s cells, greater results can be obtained when combined with microneedling. This combination treatment leads to further improved skin texture, decreased fine lines and wrinkles, a reduction in the appearance of acne scars and can also decrease the appearance of enlarged pores than microneedling alone. The expected recovery and post-care is the same as standard microneedling.

PRP Scalp Therapy For Hair Restoration

PRP Scalp therapy is another common form of PRP injections that many have found to be beneficial. The process for the procedure is similar to that of the facial, where blood is taken from the patient, and then spun rapidly in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. However, in this particular procedure, the PRP is injected into the scalp in order to stimulate hair follicles, slow the rate of hair loss and increase the thickness of the hair shaft.

Recovery From PRP Scalp Therapy Procedure

It is normal to experience some soreness/discomfort, temporary redness and swelling after the treatment for 2-5 days. You may also have a headache for up to a day afterward. Your post-care regimen will include avoiding vigorous exercise, sun and heat exposure. You should also minimize the use of certain hair products and styling aids on the same day as your treatment.

PRP Scalp Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

3-6 treatments is typically recommended spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by a maintenance regimen. Talk to your practitioner about your goals and they can advise you on the best treatment regimen.

Results will vary depending on your treatment goals and the plan you set forth with your provider. You can expect an improvement in about 3-4 months. It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle which includes eating a balanced diet and not smoking or using other nicotine products, which can disrupt the blood supply your hair needs to grow.

Differing levels of treatment may affect the sensations you feel during treatment, but most patients find the treatment experience tolerable with topical or injectable numbing, which can help to reduce any discomfort associated with this treatment.

Microneedling

Non-surgical

Microneedling

San Francisco Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to generate new collagen to smooth, firm, and tone the skin. The device creates hundreds to thousands of “micro” skin punctures per second to stimulate the skin’s natural wound healing process (inflammation, proliferation and remodeling). The goal of the procedure is to start your body’s healing process by sending collagen and elastin to patch up the tiny injuries, which subsequently heals your skin and gives you a more youthful appearance.

Microneedling is mostly used on the face and neck. It may reduce the appearance of acne scars, wrinkles, and enlarged pores. This is a minimally invasive procedure requiring little to no downtime. It is considered safe for most people who are in overall good health. It may not be safe for people who use certain acne medications, for those with active acne, or for those with moderate to severe psoriasis or eczema.
